Who is Steam Slicer?
I’m Joel and I started the progressive post-metal solo project Steam Slicer in early 2022. I’m located in the beautiful Heidelberg, Germany.
Tell us about your career so far.
I started playing guitar as a teenager, then bass guitar. I joined a death metal band on bass and, when our drummer quit, I took over the vacant position as it was easier to find a new bassist than a new drummer. We had a great couple of years and got some nice stage experience and a friendship for life. Drums became my main instrument for almost a decade, before changing back to guitar, and concentrating more on home recording. I recorded a lot of metalcore/deathcore music, but never really released it.
In 2022 I got a whole lot of inspiration and motivation when I got the news that I would become a father. That’s when I started Steam Slicer. I did overcome my fear of singing and released an EP and a full-length album in 2023. A new album is planned for November 2024.
How would you describe your sound to a four year old?
It’s rhythmic energy and loud, let’s dance!
Now elaborate on that…if you’d like.
I try to capture a certain mood or energy I have while playing. I hit record and then play for 30 to 60 min. I try to use first takes as often as possible, even if it’s not played perfectly, it captures my emotion in the best possible way. Then I build songs around the best pieces of those recordings. Structure-wise it’s a mess sometimes, but that’s why I put “progressive” in my genre description lol.
What’s your favorite album of all time?
It changes a lot, depending on where I am or was in my life. But I can always listen to “Vulgar Display of Power” by Pantera.
What does musical success look like to you?
When I enjoy listening to my own music. Diving into the world I created and finding comfort and excitement there. If other people like my music too, I’m super grateful and that’s like the cherry on top of the cake.
What is next for you?
I have a new album coming out November 3rd, 2024. The first single off of that will be out June 6th. I plan to release 2 more singles prior to the album release. And if time allows, hopefully some more collabs.
Where is the best place for people to follow you in order to stay up to date on all the awesome s#!+ you’re doing?
I’m mostly active on Facebook and Instagram, that’s where you’ll find everything you need to know. You can always message me there as well!
