Who is Drunk and Lonely?
We are an alternative country duo from St. Joseph, MO. We are Josh Huffman (lead guitarist, multi-instrumentalist, production) and Drew Nold (lead singer, songwriter, rhythm guitar, promo).
Tell us about your career so far.
Drew: We met in high school when both of us were playing in local bands. I was in a grunge band called “Sould” and Josh was in the metal band “Poppa Fearsome”. Since then, we’ve both bounced around in various bands covering different genres.
A few years ago, I got really into alt country and classic country and started writing songs that were half satire, half character study. Josh had been teaching himself home recording/music production, and he helped me piece together my own recording setup. I sent my tracks for the song “Drunk and Lonely” to him in April 2023 (just acoustic guitar and vocals) and said “make us famous!” Since then we’ve released 4 singles and a remix made by our friend (the fantastic French composer) Histheory.
We’ve had a lot of milestones over the last year, but the coolest moments were probably having music videos made for two of our songs by Mammas Maiden Studio…and also Histheory remixing “Heartstrings”. That is something I never even imagined as a possibility until it happened.
How would you describe your sound to a four-year-old?
Josh: Our sound is like Garth Brooks got in a bar fight with Elliott Smith but then they make up and get drunk together.
Drew: That is such a perfect answer, but I think you just confused the hell out of that 4-year-old. I’d say it sounds like “sad farmer music”.
Now elaborate on that…if you’d like.
Josh: Our sound is a mix of 90s country, indie rock, and alt rock. Twangy indie rock with introspective lyrics.
Drew: It kind of sounds like a guy who spent his whole life listening to alt rock and indie folk trying to pretend he’s a country singer and almost succeeding thanks to the insanely talented lead guitarist/producer he works with. Also… it sounds like Garth Brooks got in a bar fight with Elliott Smith but then they made up and got drunk together.
What’s your favorite album of all time?
Josh: That’s tough. I guess I would say Bone Thugs-n-Harmony “E. 1999 Eternal”.
Drew: It changes all the time but right now I’d probably say “OK Computer” by Radiohead. Bonus answer: My favorite alt country album of all time is Old 97’s “Too Far to Care”.
What does musical success look like to you?
Josh: Musical success is someone more than our families listening to our music on a regular basis.
Drew: Agreed! It would also be nice to be able to spend more time making music.
What is next for you?
Drew: We are currently working on our first album “A Six Pack of Sadness…” It will include our 4 original singles plus…3 more songs? We’re obviously not good at math…We also may have a surprise or two in store, but I can’t say anything about those yet.
…
Ok fine I’ll give you one: we are appearing on a Teley Irons song that should drop in the next few months. There I said it. “Everybody Knows.”
