Who is new Blue Grazer Records member Embracing Discomfort? 💙
Hey there! My name is Bill Gilmore and I am Embracing Discomfort. I like to say my music falls somewhere around the post rock/metal area with some micro dosing of psychedelic. My music is broad, diverse, expansive and immersive. I like to create different atmospheres to explore, and am inspired by all my surroundings. From the desertscape of Las Vegas, to the lush over-watered area of Seattle, where I grew up.
Tell us about your career so far.
I started in music when my friend said he wanted to start a band. We had no idea what we were doing, but I grabbed a bass and just started playing every day until I couldn’t feel my fingers anymore. The band never materialized, but I fell in love with my Ibanez, creating songs, and jamming with other people. I eventually began playing with a band in Seattle, called The Opinions. Great atmosphere with these guys as we played a bunch of bar rock type music around the Seattle/Tacoma area. We parted ways after a few years, as we all had different directions we wanted to pursue, but it was a great experience and I still talk to most of the guys from the band.
After moving to Las Vegas, I didn’t have much outlet or room for musical things. It wasn’t until a few years ago that I began playing on an acoustic guitar, jotting down some of my ideas, and I rediscovered my love for exploring different sonic avenues, for creating. I spoke with a friend about how to get set up on the recording side, and here we are.
I think my biggest milestone is having met all these fine musicians over the past year. Some of which I have been extremely blessed to have worked with, and others that I would love to work together with in the future. I love being able to create a concept in my head and following it all the way through to fruition by myself, but there is also joy in creating with other talented minds and finding a way to combine the two into a beautiful composition.
How would you describe your sound?
The sounds vary depending on the song, or the story being told. There are no rules, as far as I’m concerned. One might be a pure cinematic piece, and another might be just a banging rock tune. Typically, they are going to fall between those but also utilize pieces from each. To me, it’s not so much what it sounds like, but what am I feeling listening to it. Does it convey the emotion that I intended? Does it take you from point A, to point B, emotionally? Does it tell the story true?
What’s your favorite album of all time?
I would have to say ‘Lateralus’ by Tool. It has inspired me in so many different ways. From musical and personal development to wanting to inspire others.
What does musical success look like to you?
I believe success is being able to inspire others. To encourage others to pick up the pen, the brush, or the drumsticks. To create something from within yourself and share it with the world. To find that thing that makes you genuinely happy and to make it in your vision. To craft it and sculpt it, until it is perfect to you.
I feel that we aren’t always aware of what we are able to accomplish until we try. And most of us won’t try something unless we are assured of success. And so, it requires a sort of bravery to attempt that thing when we don’t know what it will bring. To open up our souls for the world, and face whatever may come.
What is next for you?
I am finishing up an album called ‘Pas de Deux’. It is a love story and tells of a love so great it transcends time and our perception of life itself. This is a full solo project, with the exception of some spoken word parts. (Editor’s note: It’s out on Bandcamp NOW, and we strongly recommend giving it a listen here!)
There are also some other projects on the periphery, including a new rendition of a song by a fan favorite artist, a new rendition of an ED song by a friend, and a single that is awaiting video completion. Lots of things in the pipeline.
There could possibly be some new Nexus Effect brewing as well!
Where is the best place for people to follow you in order to stay up to date on Embracing Discomfort?
I am up to date on Bandcamp, and also do promotional video, release info on Facebook, Instagram and Tik Tok. I have left the streaming platform scene, but that is a story for another day.
