True Blue: Emily Gray

Who is the newest member of the Blue Grazer Records family? 💙
I’m Emily Gray, I’m an alternative singer-songwriter who makes slightly emo folk pop rock music about learning to love yourself and understand the world (and also sometimes about chickens and the apocalypse)…

Tell us about your career so far.
I started performing and writing songs when I was around 14 years old. I decided to start ‘taking music seriously’ after Covid. Seemed like life was too short and unpredictable not to give it a real shot – that’s when I started releasing music on streaming platforms and learning my way around social media.

Since then I’ve released a bunch of music! I released my EP ‘Apocalypse’ a few years back which I’m still super proud of. It’s like a 9 minute concept piece about a lone survivor travelling through the post-apocalyptic wasteland. I’ve also just released my first album ‘Kaleidoscope’ and I’m promoting it by going on tour in the UK so it’s all happening!

How would you describe your sound to a four year old? Then elaborate on that…if you’d like.
Happy sad acoustic music. I don’t think I need to elaborate- if you get it, you get it.

Who are your biggest influences?
I love all sorts of different music. I’ve always been inspired by the 2000s/2010’s alternative scene like Paramore, MCR, Panic at the Disco etc but I’m also obsessed with Passenger and Will Varley…so I guess that’s where the folk influence comes from! A lot of my music is also heavily inspired by Ren – he does a lot of acoustic storytelling and uses spoken word in such an intelligent way. I’d definitely say that my vocals are inspired by Freddie Mercury too. His belting and falsetto are iconic.

What does musical success look like to you?
I mean, I guess I have two versions. The realistic version is: really making a difference to a handful of people in a meaningful way, playing your own songs to small crowds who appreciate and engage with them, keep growing and learning as an artist.

The idealistic version is: music as a full-time career, playing original songs at festivals and headlining large venues. ‘Making it’ in such a way that you can devote most of your time and energy to music and make a decent living from it, travel the world and really make a difference to a lot of people (and have fun doing it).

What is next for you?
Honestly I haven’t really thought about what I’m gonna do after the album release and the tour, probably just promote the album a bunch and start writing and recording again. I’ve been so busy with everything that I’ve barely had time to be creative so that’s what I’m looking forward to the most!

Thank you, Emily, for taking the time to answer our questions amidst all the craziness of an album release and a tour, and welcome to Blue Grazer Records! 💙
